In a city known for it’s amazing architectures and mouth-watering food, celiacs and gluten-free eaters are probably wondering if they can take part in Barcelona’s internationally renowned food scene, and the short answer is hell yes! Barcelona is one of the best places to travel gluten-free not just because of the sheer number of 100% gluten-free restaurants, or the number of restaurants that cater to celiacs, but their understanding of celiac disease and what it takes to cater to us.

From menus labeled specifically for celiacs, to gluten-free paellas and tapas, to gluten-free beer lists as long as my arms, here are 20+ reasons (restaurants) why traveling gluten-free in Barcelona is a must for celiacs.

Establishments marked with a star (★) are 100% gluten-free.

Always Double Check

Unfortunately it is a very common practice for 100% gluten-free restaurants in Spain to serve regular bread in their establishments. As contradicting as that sounds, their entire menu and kitchen are truly 100% gluten-free, they just serve regular bread to please their gluten eaters. The bread is usually stored and warmed up in a different area away from the kitchen to avoid cross-contamination!

To avoid getting glutened like we almost did, always double check that the bread given to you is gluten-free! Better yet, always inform the waiter you are celiac even at 100% gluten-free eatery! Just to be safe.

Gluten-free beer in Spain isn’t 100% gluten-free

99% of Gluten-free beer in Spain (actually most of all Europe) is actually “gluten-removed beer” meaning it is distilled from gluten (i.e. barley) and not from non-gluten-containing grains. Though most of these beers are certified gluten-free, I personally do not drink gluten-removed beer as I believe it is not safe for celiacs. You can be your own judge.

Barcelona’s best fish and chip shop chain has finally opened up a dedicated gluten-free fish and chip shop on Casanova street. The fish and chips are perfect. They’re not oily, they’re crispy, and they always hit the spot. If you’re looking for traditional fish and chips, this isn’t the spot. The batter is far from traditional and the fries are seasoned with garam masala and a side, spicy mango chutney. If onions, garlic, and curry are a problem for you, the staff is happy to make it without, just ask them, they are very friendly and understanding. Beside fish they also sell other fried goodies like calamari and shrimp. While traveling gluten-free in Barcelona there is no doubt that this little shop needs to be on your must-eat list.

Please note: There are several Fish & Chips Shop in Barcelona, but only one is 100% gluten-free.

Carrer de Casanova, 91, 08011 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

On the hunt for gluten-free paella in Barcelona? Then look no further than L’Arrossería Xàtiva. With over 25 different paellas to choose from, and 4 which are non-gluten, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of those choices include the traditional Valencia paella with chicken, rabbit and garrofó, black ink paella, and Catalan paella. Another bonus for L’Arrossería Xàtiva is that they offer individual paella (except on weekends), when most restaurants require a minimum of 2 ppl per serving. Besides paella, this restaurant also offers gluten-free options for fried dishes, starters, and dessert. No gluten-free Barcelona trip is complete without a visit to L’Arrossería Xàtiva to devour some paella.

Carrer del Torrent d’En Vidalet, 26, 08012 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

A great gluten-free restaurant in Barcelona not far from Las Ramblas, is the elegant En Ville. Their entire kitchen menu is gluten-free. However, in addition to serving gluten-free bread (for an additional price), they also offer regular bread, making it a 99% gluten-free restaurant (not 100% GF like other websites would like you to believe). En Ville proudly advertises their gluten-free accredited stickers letting all celiacs know that they know what they are doing and that they provide safe meals. Here you can enjoy traditional spanish tapas like iberian cured ham, croquettes, and patatas bravas, as well as traditional dishes such as seafood paella, suckling lamb, and Catalan crème brulée. En Ville will fulfills all your Spanish food dreams with a side of great wine, don’t miss out!

Carrer del Dr. Dou, 14, 08001 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Just a block away from the famous Sagrada Familia you will find one of the best gluten-free pizzas in Barcelona, better yet, delicious gluten-free Italian food. All their pasta and risotto dishes are suitable for celiacs, meaning they have safe gluten-free option for just about everything on their menu, making this Italian restaurant a true celiac paradise! Did I mention there are 30 pizzas that can be gluten-free and all you have to do is pay an extra Euro, now that’s what I call winning! The staff are knowledgeable about cross contamination as the owner has daughters who are celiac. Il Piccolo Focone is a small place that gets busy very quickly, so I highly recommend booking a table in advance.

Carrer del Dos de Maig, 268, 08025 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Travel Tip: La Sagrada Familia is very popular and tickets are usually sold out weeks, or even months in advance. I highly recommend booking your tickets well in advance, or you won’t be seeing this magnificent church, or you will end up paying premium price ($80) from a third party agency for a ticket that cost only a fourth of that. Book your tickets here today.

I have to admit, when I first walked into this sandwich shop, I thought “there is no way this place can possibly offer safe gluten-free options for celiacs”. But after a conversation with one of the staff members, my mind was put at ease. Conesa is an accredited establishment that provides a safe place in Barcelona to devour gluten-free sandwiches. Almost 95% of the sandwiches can be made gluten-free, which is prepared in a separate area on a dedicated panini press. To even further prevent any chance of cross contamination, no one handles your gluten-free sandwich except the staff in the dedicated gluten-free area. All the condiments are also gluten-free, so no worries there. Gluten-free vegetarian sandwiches are also available. Conesa is without a doubt a fantastic choice for eating gluten-free in Barcelona and should not be missed while exploring the Gothic Quarter.

Carrer de la Llibreteria, 1, 08002 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Travel Tip: Though the majority of Park Guell is free to explore and admire, I recommend purchasing an admission ticket to the Monumental Zone of Park Güell so you can visit Gaudi’s work up close and personal and have the chance to take thousands of pictures. This ticket also includes a shuttle bus to the park and admission to Casa del Guarda. Gluten-free pancakes, french toast, crepes, and eggs benedict in the heart of the Eixample district, Copasetic is the perfect spot for gluten-free brunch in Barcelona. Though not a dedicated gluten-free restaurant, Copasetic has an extensive menu with plenty of naturally gluten-free options, and options that can be made gluten-free such as their burgers. You’ll be happy to discover that all their crepes, desserts, and pancakes are naturally gluten-free. Copasetic also offers dairy-free, lactose free, and vegetarian/vegan options.

Carrer de la Diputació, 55, 08015 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

What if I told you all your gluten-free Chinese food dreams can become a reality in Barcelona? Would you believe it? Well you better. Out of China’s clearly marked menu is filled with tasty gluten-free options. Dishes like fried rice, gluten-free fried Chinese bread, pork spare ribs, and sesame chicken are just a few of the things they serve, but the true highlight has to be the gluten-free dim sum! When was the last time you had dim sim? Probably never.

The staff and cooks prepare the meals with care and consideration for celiacs. From the moment you mention you are celiac, they bring a bottle of gluten-free soy sauce to the table and take all the precautions needed to provide a safe and delicious gluten-free meal. Out of China is an absolute treat for anyone who’s gluten-free in Barcelona as it’s not everyday you’ll get a chance to devour dumplings while traveling gluten-free.

Carrer d’Aribau, 112, 08036 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Though this dedicated gluten-free restaurant is a bit out of the city center, their extensive menu, good food, and open kitchen (doesn’t close in afternoons) will bring you to their doorsteps. Their menu offers healthier options such as fresh pressed juices, salads, and açai and poke bowls while also satisfying our guilty pleasure needs with pizzas, pastas, and burgers. M2 Gluten Free has many vegan, lactose, dairy, and egg free options available.

Avinguda Diagonal, 505, 08029 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Cal Marius 499, which is just a few minutes walk from La Sagrada Familia is what celiacs call gluten-free heaven. It checks off all the right boxes, an entire gluten-free and lactose free menu*, traditional Catalan tapas dishes, pastrami sandwiches on gluten-free bagels, and one of the largest selections of gluten-free beers you’ll find anywhere, I’m talking about 25+ options with naturally gluten-free beers as well. Did I mention they cater to other allergens and dietary needs including vegans?) Proudly advertising themselves as a celiac paradise, Cal Marius 499 is a necessary stop on every gluten-free Barcelona itinerary especially if you want to enjoy safe gluten-free tapas.

Celiac Note: Though Cal Marius’ entire menu is gluten free, the establishment is not 100% gluten-free because they do serve regular bread and bagels. However, they do guarantee 0% possibility of cross contamination, which is great. Just make sure to ask for gluten-free bread when ordering!

Carrer de Mallorca, 449, 08013 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

What’s a gluten-free guide without another restaurant where you can devour gluten-free pizza in Barcelona? At this one there is no chance of cross contamination as it’s a 100% gluten-free restaurant. Messié Sin Gluten offers a great selection of pizzas but my absolute favorite was the Helena, which comes with caramelized onions and sweet potato! I also love that I was able to get the lactose-free version as most of their pizzas offer lactose or vegan cheese options.

Besides pizza, they have pasta dishes, fantastic salads, and homemade pressed juices. If healthy juices aren’t your thing you can chase your pizza down with one of the 20+ gluten-free beers they offer. P.S. they do offer a naturally gluten-free beer, Schnitzer Bräu, which is made from millet.

We loved this restaurant and managed to eat here three times while in Barcelona, not only is the food delicious and safe, Messié is one of the only gluten-free restaurants that’s open all day, making it one of the best gluten-free restaurants in Barcelona and the perfect back-up plan. Messié has another location on Calle de Muntaner at 109, Messié Sin Gluten Muntaner.

Celiac Note: They do have a 3rd location, Messie Pizza on Carrer del Torrent de l’Olla, 65 which is not gluten-free! So please take note of which one you go to.

Carrer de Siracusa, 15, 08012 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Luckily Thai Barcelona is nothing like traveling gluten-free in Thailand, as you can truly experience the exotic flavors of Thai cuisine. Accredited by the Catalonia Celiacs Association, Thai Barcelona offer celiacs a five-page gluten-free menu which features popular Thai dishes like pad thai, green curry, and mango sticky rice, as well as not so popular traditional dishes. The staff are very knowledgeable and know what it takes to keep a celiac and their gut happy. For a piece of Thailand in Barcelona, be sure to visit Thai Barcelona!

Carrer de la Diputació, 273, 08007 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Another excellent gluten-free restaurant near Sagrada Familia is Gula Sana. At this 100% gluten-free eatery, you can have it all, at anytime on any day of the week, as they serve breakfast, brunch, and lunch everyday until 9pm. Devour delicious dishes like pancakes or eggs benedict for breakfast, while for brunch and lunch you can taste traditional spanish dishes such as empanadas, gazpacho, salmorejo, and croquettes, to name a few.

Their huge counter filled with cakes, pies, cookies, and a selection of gluten-free ice cream and cones is also enough to satisfy any sweet cravings. Besides the incredible food, Gula Sana’s ability to cater to all diets and different allergies is why it’s one of the best gluten-free restaurants in Barcelona.

Carrer de la Diputació, 361, 08009 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Rated as the best vegetarian restaurant in Barcelona, you won’t want to miss out on this gastronomic bistro in the Gothic Quarter. Rasoterra offers creative and complex vegetarian based cuisine made from locally sourced, organic, and fair-trade ingredients which also happen to be mostly gluten-free. The tapas style menu is 90% gluten-free with just a few options that can’t be modified. I highly recommend going for their inexpensive seasonal tasting menu to get a taste of everything. With every bite, Rasoterra will demonstrate vegetarian and vegan cuisine isn’t boring, rather it’s flavorful, healthy, and good for the soul. Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, you’ll enjoy a dining experience at Rasoterra. Accredited by the Catalonia Celiacs Association.

Carrer del Palau, 5, 08002 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

The popular Calaltan chain restaurant which is famous for its quality grilled meats and tapas knows how to cater to celiacs and gluten-free eaters. Their dedicated gluten-free menu is highlighted with macaroni with a four cheese sauce, gluten-free pan con tomate, delicious grilled fish, and meats like duck, lamb, octopus, and T-bone steaks. For my vegetarians, they have a handful of tasty charcoal-grilled vegetables! Mussol has several locations around the city, however do note that Mussol Arena doesn’t offer gluten-free options.

Various locations | Visit Website

Not far from the Arc de Triomf and the Parc de la Ciutadella is one of the best gastronomic discoveries in Barcelona for healthy, flexitarian cuisine, Flax & Kale Passage. The menu is 90% plant based, however, they do offer mouthwatering dishes with oily fish like salmon or tuna. Some popular dishes from the menu are definitely the “Impossible Croissant”, the Superfood’s Pho Soup, any of the excellent wood oven pizzas, and my favorite bbq pulled pork’ jackfruit Bao! The best part is that the entire restaurant is 100% gluten-free and they are certified by the celiac association!

Flax & Kale is an all around gluten-free superstar restaurant as it offers dishes from breakfast to dinner with plenty of baked goods, desserts, and ice cream with gluten-free cones. Their food is delicious, fresh, high quality, and creative! A visit here will be a welcome treat during your gluten-free Barcelona trip.

Celiac Note: Flax and Kale has three restaurants in Barcelona, but the Passage is the only one that’s 100% gluten-free.

Carrer de Sant Pere Més Alt, 31-33, 08003 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Update: This restaurant is now 100% gluten-free!!!

Not far from Mercado de la Boqueria, or La Rambla, is this fantastic mediterranean restaurant where the roots of northern and southern Italy are mixed with the bases acquired in Catalonia. No worries of gluten or cross contamination as Amiette is one of the many 100% gluten-free bakeries in Barcelona. Amiette has a fantastic selection of pastries, bread, and savory items. However, I highly recommend their flaky chocolate croissant and churros. Yes, they have gluten-free churros! They also have some of the best lactose-free and gluten-free bread in Barcelona. Amiette is a small bakery with no seating, so it’s takeaway only.

Carrer de Calàbria, 65, 08015 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Located just a few blocks from the must visit Casa Batllo is the best gluten-free bakery in Barcelona in my opinion. Jansana Bakery is up there with my all-time favorite gluten-free bakeries, like the ones in Paris. Everything we tried was phenomenal, and you couldn’t tell that the pastries were gluten free. But don’t worry, they are, and this bakery is 100% gluten-free. They have traditional Spanish pastries like ensaïmada, and palmeras, amazing freshly baked gluten-free bread, sandwiches, and more. This bakery is a must while in Barcelona, you won’t regret it.

Carrer de Balmes, 106, 08008 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

Travel Tip: If you plan on visiting Casa Batllo, buy your skip-the-line tickets online to avoid the long lines.

Whether catching a soccer match at Camp Nou, or just exploring the area, you must visit yet another fantastic gluten-free bakery in Barcelona, Celiadictos. And yes, they have gluten-free ice cream cones! Though they offer some traditional flavors I recommend being a bit adventurous and trying some of their unconventional flavors, you’ll be in for a treat. Beside ice cream they also have waffles and smoothies.

Please Note: On the same street is Gocce Di Latte, which isn’t gluten-free so be sure to go to the Vegan one which is 100% gluten-free.

Carrer de l’Espaseria, 14, 08003 Barcelona, Spain | Visit Website

As we update this article we found that not only are some gluten-free restaurants are closed but new ones are popping up too. I personally have not eaten at any of them, however they are all in partnership with FACE, Spain’s celiac association.

Telepizza – Pizza chain that offers four different gluten-free pizzas. Not all Telepizza restaurants have gluten-free options.

McDonald’s – In all McDonald’s in Spain you can safely eat gluten-free burgers on gf buns as well as fries and other products. Big Macs, McRoyal, Happy Meals, and McMuffin are just a few things you can eat here.

Burger King – Offers gluten-free cheeseburgers.

VIPS – Offers a gluten-free menu with a few options such as nachos, burgers, and desserts.

Rodilla – Here you can have gluten-free sandwiches and tostadas with butter, jam, tomato, and oil.

Ginos – An Italian chain that offers a small gluten-free menu with a starter, 2 gluten-free pasta options, 2 pizzas, and 2 desserts.

100 Montaditos – A Spanish sandwich chain shop selling montaditos, they offer 2 gluten-free montaditos options, gluten-free beer, and packaged chips. Gluten-free sandwiches are sealed and prepared elsewhere.

An elegant four-star boutique hotel located in the historic Gothic Quarter. The hotel’s 4 Capellans restaurant, which makes Mediterian cuisine, offers a menu for celiacs. For breakfast they offer bread, muffins, and pastries.

Check Price & Availability

A relaxing four-star spa hotel with a jacuzzi, saunas, turkish baths, and ice caves not far from Camp Nou stadium. Chefs and staff are well trained to cater to celiacs and can provide safe gluten-free options for every meal including breakfast. This hotel has an agreement with FACE, Spain’s celiac association.

Check Price & Availability

A 4-star hotel perfectly situated in between Sagrada Familia and Park Güell. This hotel also has an agreement with FACE and can offer gluten-free items for breakfast.

Check Price & Availability

Even though there are over 15 dedicated gluten-free restaurants in Barcelona, and even more celiac friendly eatery, it’s always a good idea to have a back-up plan, i.e an apartment with a kitchen. This is especially true for Spain as many restaurants aren’t open during our lunchtime or early dinner time and are often completely closed. So as a backup plan consider stayong at an Airbnb rentals with during your gluten-free vacation in Barcelona.

There is not a supermarket that you can walk into in Spain that doesn’t have gluten-free options. You’ll find many things labeled “sin gluten” (gluten-free) including already made food, frozen items, and more. If the items are certified gluten-free they will either have the FACE gluten-free logo or the EU gluten-free logo. Popular supermarkets have their own brand and carry international gluten-free brands. El Cortes Inglés, Carrefour, and Mercadona, are the supermarkets we found with the largest gluten-free products. Glut End on Carrer de Rocafort is a dedicated gluten-free shop.

Table of Contents
