I’ve traveled to many places in the world as a celiac, but when it comes to London, I can truly say it’s a celiac’s playground! Here, you can indulge in all the delicious cuisine around London, and the best part is you won’t miss out on any traditional British dishes. Almost every traditional dish has a tasty gluten-free counterpart lurking on the streets of London. From gluten-free fish and chips and English breakfast to gluten-free street food and afternoon teas, I promise you’ll have the full British experience with our extensive gluten-free London guide. After all, this is the most comprehensive guide to eating gluten-free in London!

Restaurants marked with an asterisk (*) are certified by Coeliac UK, the celiac association of the UK.

In the heart of Soho is London’s first 100% gluten-free Italian restaurant, Leggero (formerly known as La Polenteria). This celiac’s heaven serves food that’s not only 100% safe, but it’s so good that you’ll end up triple checking it to make sure it’s truly gluten-free. With a menu that’s divided into small and large plates, you can get a taste of everything with a mixture of smaller plates or opt to stuff your face, like I did, with one of the larger plates. Some of my faves are the must-have homemade focaccia bread, the funky-looking but tasty black ink ravioli stuffed with salmon, the chestnut pappardelle in truffle oil, and of course their mouth-watering tiramisu.

Besides being 100% gluten-free, Leggero is allergen friendly and has many dishes suitable for those allergic to nuts, eggs, soy, and milk. They also have many vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Making a reservation is highly recommended as it’s a fairly small but popular restaurant. However, if you can’t get a table, they do have stalls at Mercato Metropolitano and in Camden Market so you can enjoy some of their delish food while exploring London’s street food scene.

64 Old Compton St, Soho, London W1D 4UQ, UK | Website

London’s first allergy-free sweet shop in Soho, Yorica has damn good ice creams that are free from gluten, eggs, nuts and dairy…they’re also vegan! So whether you’re craving ice cream, froyo, a shake, or waffles, you can have it all, as nothing is off limits! Flavors range from cookies & cream to my favorite, gooey vanilla cookie. But besides having great tasting ice cream and froyo, I think the best part, at least for me, is decking out my ice cream with all the crazy toppings! I am talking about gluten-free cookies, gummy bears, marshmallows, chocolate sauce, and even waffles! Did I mention that everything is free from artificial preservatives, colors, and sweeteners? Finally there’s a place where I can satisfy my sweet tooth without sacrificing my health!

130 Wardour St, Soho, London W1F 8ZN, UK | Website

It’s not often that a celiac can go shopping at a mall and safely eat at a restaurant or in the food court, but at Selfridges Oxford Street Mall we can do just that. Located on the third floor is the 100% gluten-free cafe, Hemsley & Hemsley. The menu is packed with wholesome and nutrient dense dishes that are also free from grains, refined sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oils, and of course gluten. While there, I enjoyed their slow cooked beef ragu with raw courgette, the piri-piri chicken wings, and the devilishly good chestnut crepes. An added bonus to this healthy yet flavorsome cafe is they serve afternoon tea after 3pm. So if you are looking for a pick-me-up while shopping at Selfridges, Hemsley & Hemsley’s afternoon tea awaits you.

400 Oxford St, Marylebone, London W1A 1AB, UK | Website

Aprés Food is redefining comfort food by cheffing up delicious comfort food that’s not only yummy but healthy. The menu is packed with mouth-watering, home-cooked food like lamb curry, risotto, sweet potato hash, healthy juices, smoothies, and more. Everything is made with quality ingredients, all of which are gluten-free, free of refined sugars, and mostly organic. I highly recommend their breakfast, the bruschetta platter, and the homemade bread, they’re on point! With such amazing ethos and passion for creating food, I would say this gem is seriously an amazing addition to the growing number of 100% gluten-free eateries around the world.

72 St John St, Clerkenwell, London EC1M 4DT, UK | Website

If you find yourself strolling through London’s famous Covent Garden area looking for a healthy, yet tasty quick meal, look no further than Farmstand. Not only is every dish entirely gluten-free, they are also free from dairy, added sugar, and artificial ingredients. Farmstand serves up fresh and wholesome food buffet style, where you get to build your own plate or lunch box by choosing a combination of mains like cuban beef, sides, and sauces.

Farmstand food is also backed by wonderful ethos as all of their ingredients are sourced from UK farmers. Plus, their meats and fish are ethically sourced and they have a 0% landfill waste. Farmstand is definitely a restaurant I can stand with. It’s undeniably a great find if you’re looking for a dedicated gluten-free restaurant in Covent Garden!

42 Drury Ln, London WC2B 5AJ, UK | Website

London’s vibrant Covent Garden houses many gluten-free restaurants, but one that stands out for its exquisite cuisine and posh dining experience is unmistakably Indigo. Located in the elegant One Aldwych Hotel, Indigo serves incredible 100% gluten-free and dairy-free cuisines for lunch and dinner. They have a wonderful tasting menu that includes seared scallops and braised shoulder lamb, but there’s also an a la carte menu that has must-have gluten-free fish and chips. Though pricey, the food is absolutely divine!

Indigo also has one of the most creative afternoon teas in London, a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed afternoon tea that even comes with a golden egg! Indigo Restaurant is a must-visit, especially if you are searching for an exceptional pre or post-theatre meal, as its near some of London’s best theatres.

Celiac Note: Though Indigo serves a dedicated gluten-free menu for lunch and dinner, their kitchen is not a dedicated kitchen. For breakfast they prepare food that does contain gluten. However, I should note that they are accredited by the UK coeliac association.

1 Aldwych, London WC2B 4BZ, UK | Website

Tucked away in a basement in Soho is where healthy meets tasty. The breads, the sandwiches, and the cakes are to die for. Whenever I am in London, I always take a loaf or two (no judgements please) to go. My favorite sandwiches are the savory and juicy BBQ pulled pork sandwich and the crunchy toasted tuna melt, and the smoked salmon is exactly what the doctor ordered. It’s safe to say I am in love with their breads.

Beyond Bread is also a great place to enjoy brunch before exploring London’s attractions. The brunch menu includes waffles, french toast, and a full English breakfast. Visiting London and not visiting Beyond Bread would easily be a celiac sin!

Along with their location is Fitzrovia, they have a stall at the Selfridges Food Hall and another on Upper Street in Islington.

2 Charlotte Pl, Fitzrovia, London W1T 1SB, UK | Website

Located in the colorful and vibrant Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden is the plant-based restaurant Wild Food Cafe. To be honest, whether you’re a vegan or meat-lover, you’ll definitely enjoy their unique and tasty meals.

Essence’s sister brand, Essence Express, offers a grab and go option. Everything that’s usually off limits for celiacs at regular restaurants is what you’ll find on Niche’s vast menu. I am talking about classic British dishes like hearty and savory pies, a full English breakfast, white chocolate blondies, quiches, sausages, and mash. To list my favorites would be to list the entire menu, but if I had to recommend a few things not to miss I would say the parmesan and cheddar doughnuts, sausage and mash, or the finger-licking good fried chicken.

When it comes to eating with allergies or dietary restrictions at Niche, vegans and dairy-free guests are well catered to. There’s truly no place to eat gluten-free in London quite like Niche, it’s one of the best gluten-free restaurants in London. From the English breakfast to the cakes and breads, everything is sugar-free and gluten-free. They also have many vegan and dairy-free options. The menu is packed with savory and sweet goodies like quiches, sausages rolls, and cheesecakes, and on weekends you can indulge in buckwheat crepes. Their baked goodies are just as awesome and include pecan pie and super moist and chocolatey brownies, you can’t even tell they’re vegan or gluten-free! Same goes for the ice cream. If I have to recommend a once in a celiac lifetime menu option, it would be the doughnut/cookie ice cream sandwiches, they are unbelievably good. The stars of Pearl & Groove in West London are the mini cakes. At first glance these cakes don’t look as appealing as most cakes or pastries, but I learned (just as you will) to never judge a book by it’s cover. What these cakes lack in appearance they make up for in taste! If you don’t want to trek all the way to West London for these delicious cakes (though you should), you can enjoy some of their goodies scattered around London restaurants like Farmstand and Selfridges Food Hall. Though lacking in the dessert department, they do have five beers and cider on offer. Olley’s also offers this menu for take-out if you’re not in the mood to sit-in.

Update: The gluten-free menu is now available everyday on request.

65-69 Norwood Rd, Herne Hill, London SE24 9AA, UK | Website

Though widely advertised as a healthy, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free cafe, Lu Ma Cafe is also very gluten-free friendly. With the exception of two drinks and the soup of the day, which comes with sourdough bread, everything is gluten-free.

Celiac Note: Some of the bread mix contains gluten-free oats for those who want to avoid it or can’t tolerate it.

43 Worple Rd, Wimbledon, London SW19 4JZ, UK | Website

Though the menu is seasonal, it’s always 98% gluten-free. Gluten dishes can easily be made gluten-free by opting for gluten-free buns/bread or by getting a GF Yorkshire pudding. The menu itself has many traditional British options like a full breakfast and fish and chips while also boasting other awesome dishes like gluten-free waffles, wings, mac and cheese, and cheese fries. As for cross-contamination, buns are toasted in a separate toaster, and they have separate fryers.

Montreal House, Market Square, London SE16 7AQ, United Kingdom | Website

Crispy, juicy fried chicken is hard to come by for celiacs, but fear not because London’s Bird restaurant chain makes finger-licking good gluten-free fried chicken. All of their fried chicken is gluten free, and is prepared and cooked in a separate area away from items with gluten. Their fries are also gluten-free, except in the Camden branch where they are fried in oil containing gluten. As for the sides and sauces, there are a few gluten-free options, including the buffalo and blue cheese sauce. When ordering, just make sure to mention you are a celiac or gluten-intolerant.

Various locations | Website

Arepa & Co.’s menu is packed with popular Venezuelan cuisines, but the true star is the gluten-free Venezuelan corn bread, arepa! This versatile bread is stuffed with anything you can think of. From shredded beef, cheese, and avocado to smoked salmon and plantains, whichever you choose you’ll be in heaven. Best part, the menu is almost completely gluten-free with the exception of one starter and the desserts. Arepa & Co. also has a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian options. They have a second location in Bethnal Green.

58A De Beauvoir Cres, London N1 5SB, UK | Website

Though not widely advertised, 100 Hoxton is a very gluten-free friendly restaurant, as most of their menu is naturally gluten-free. The food is mainly made up of Asian flavors and spices, and their dishes are creative and simple yet mouthwatering. As for catering to other allergens and dietary needs, 100 Hoxton is very accommodating.

100-102 Hoxton St, London N1 6SG, UK | Website

Mattarello Restaurant has a limited menu that does not serve pizza, but sells the best damn gluten-free pasta in London! Specializing in Bologna pastas, you can indulge in Italian homemade and fresh pastas that don’t just include spaghetti, but also tagliatelle and tortellini. I highly recommend the tagliatelle or tortellini with bolognese ragu sauce. As for desserts, they’re all gluten-free including the chocolate souffle and tiramisu!

3 Middlesex St, London E1 7EX, UK | Website

The Bach at Broadway Market or in Hoxton is a great spot for a gluten-free breakfast or brunch. This New Zealand style cafe has gluten-free bread on offer, which makes all their small and big plates and toasties available for gluten-free eaters at an additional price. The bread is heated in a separate toaster. With a chef that is gluten intolerant and a cafe that’s very willing to accommodate dietary needs, you know you’ll be in good hands.

98 Hoxton St, London N1 6SG, UK | Website

Every Wednesday at both locations is Oliver’s gluten-free Wednesdays. On these days they change the oil and make a dedicated fryer just for gluten-free fish and chips. The batter is rich, gluten-free, and crispy, but not oily. Besides fish and chips, they serve onion rings, gluten-free beer, and desserts like deep-fried Mars bars and warm apple crumble pie. Oliver’s has locations in Belsize Park and Whetstone.

Table of Contents
