100% Gluten-Free Restaurants in London

Restaurants marked with an asterisk (*) are certified by Coeliac UK, the celiac association of the UK.

Leggero*

In the heart of Soho is London’s first 100% gluten-free Italian restaurant, Leggero (formerly known as La Polenteria). This celiac’s heaven serves food that’s not only 100% safe, but it’s so good that you’ll end up triple checking it to make sure it’s truly gluten-free. With a menu that’s divided into small and large plates, you can get a taste of everything with a mixture of smaller plates or opt to stuff your face, like I did, with one of the larger plates. Some of my faves are the must-have homemade focaccia bread, the funky-looking but tasty black ink ravioli stuffed with salmon, the chestnut pappardelle in truffle oil, and of course their mouth-watering tiramisu.

Besides being 100% gluten-free, Leggero is allergen friendly and has many dishes suitable for those allergic to nuts, eggs, soy, and milk. They also have many vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Making a reservation is highly recommended as it’s a fairly small but popular restaurant. However, if you can’t get a table, they do have stalls at Mercato Metropolitano and in Camden Market so you can enjoy some of their delish food while exploring London’s street food scene.

Yorica!

London’s first allergy-free sweet shop in Soho, Yorica has damn good ice creams that are free from gluten, eggs, nuts and dairy…they’re also vegan! So whether you’re craving ice cream, froyo, a shake, or waffles, you can have it all, as nothing is off limits! Flavors range from cookies & cream to my favorite, gooey vanilla cookie. But besides having great tasting ice cream and froyo, I think the best part, at least for me, is decking out my ice cream with all the crazy toppings! I am talking about gluten-free cookies, gummy bears, marshmallows, chocolate sauce, and even waffles! Did I mention that everything is free from artificial preservatives, colors, and sweeteners? Finally there’s a place where I can satisfy my sweet tooth without sacrificing my health!

Hemsley & Hemsley Cafe

It’s not often that a celiac can go shopping at a mall and safely eat at a restaurant or in the food court, but at Selfridges Oxford Street Mall we can do just that. Located on the third floor is the 100% gluten-free cafe, Hemsley & Hemsley. The menu is packed with wholesome and nutrient dense dishes that are also free from grains, refined sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oils, and of course gluten. While there, I enjoyed their slow cooked beef ragu with raw courgette, the piri-piri chicken wings, and the devilishly good chestnut crepes. An added bonus to this healthy yet flavorsome cafe is they serve afternoon tea after 3pm. So if you are looking for a pick-me-up while shopping at Selfridges, Hemsley & Hemsley’s afternoon tea awaits you.

Aprés Food Co.

Aprés Food is redefining comfort food by cheffing up delicious comfort food that’s not only yummy but healthy. The menu is packed with mouth-watering, home-cooked food like lamb curry, risotto, sweet potato hash, healthy juices, smoothies, and more. Everything is made with quality ingredients, all of which are gluten-free, free of refined sugars, and mostly organic. I highly recommend their breakfast, the bruschetta platter, and the homemade bread, they’re on point! With such amazing ethos and passion for creating food, I would say this gem is seriously an amazing addition to the growing number of 100% gluten-free eateries around the world.

Indigo Restaurant at One Aldwych*

London’s vibrant Covent Garden houses many gluten-free restaurants, but one that stands out for its exquisite cuisine and posh dining experience is unmistakably Indigo. Located in the elegant One Aldwych Hotel, Indigo serves incredible 100% gluten-free and dairy-free cuisines for lunch and dinner. They have a wonderful tasting menu that includes seared scallops and braised shoulder lamb, but there’s also an a la carte menu that has must-have gluten-free fish and chips. Though pricey, the food is absolutely divine!

Indigo also has one of the most creative afternoon teas in London, a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed afternoon tea that even comes with a golden egg! Indigo Restaurant is a must-visit, especially if you are searching for an exceptional pre or post-theatre meal, as its near some of London’s best theatres.

Celiac Note: Though Indigo serves a dedicated gluten-free menu for lunch and dinner, their kitchen is not a dedicated kitchen. For breakfast they prepare food that does contain gluten. However, I should note that they are accredited by the UK coeliac association.

Beyond Bread*

Beyond Bread is hands down the best gluten-free bakery in London. The breads, the sandwiches, and the cakes are to die for. Whenever I am in London, I always take a loaf or two (no judgements please) to go. My favorite sandwiches are the savory and juicy BBQ pulled pork sandwich and the crunchy toasted tuna melt, and the smoked salmon is exactly what the doctor ordered. It’s safe to say I am in love with their breads.

Beyond Bread is also a great place to enjoy brunch before exploring London’s attractions. The brunch menu includes waffles, french toast, and a full English breakfast. Visiting London and not visiting Beyond Bread would easily be a celiac sin!

Along with their location is Fitzrovia, they have a stall at the Selfridges Food Hall and another on Upper Street in Islington.

Niche*

For an amazing 100% gluten-free dinner in London, Niche is your spot. Everything that’s usually off limits for celiacs at regular restaurants is what you’ll find on Niche’s vast menu. I am talking about classic British dishes like hearty and savory pies, a full English breakfast, white chocolate blondies, quiches, sausages, and mash. To list my favorites would be to list the entire menu, but if I had to recommend a few things not to miss I would say the parmesan and cheddar doughnuts, sausage and mash, or the finger-licking good fried chicken.

When it comes to eating with allergies or dietary restrictions at Niche, vegans and dairy-free guests are well catered to. There’s truly no place to eat gluten-free in London quite like Niche, it’s one of the best gluten-free restaurants in London. Romeo’s Sugar Free Bakery

A great spot for a gluten-free breakfast in London is Romeo’s Sugar Free Bakery in Islington. From the English breakfast to the cakes and breads, everything is sugar-free and gluten-free. They also have many vegan and dairy-free options. The menu is packed with savory and sweet goodies like quiches, sausages rolls, and cheesecakes, and on weekends you can indulge in buckwheat crepes. The gluten-free goodies are good, but they’re kind of on the expensive side for what it is. Nonetheless, it’s worth adding to your list of must-visit gluten-free spots in London.

178 Upper St, London N1 1RG, UK | Website

Cookies And Scream

Cookies and Scream is a 100% vegan cookie and shake bar with some of the best shakes I’ve had. Their salted caramel and cookie dough shakes are a must! Their baked goodies are just as awesome and include pecan pie and super moist and chocolatey brownies, you can’t even tell they’re vegan or gluten-free! Same goes for the ice cream. If I have to recommend a once in a celiac lifetime menu option, it would be the doughnut/cookie ice cream sandwiches, they are unbelievably good. Cookies and Scream is by far one of the best places in London for a sinfully good gluten-free treat!

Cookies and Scream also used to have a location in Camden, but it’s since closed because of a nearby fire.

Pearl & Groove

This little flourless bakery on Portobello Road is 100% gluten-free with many dairy-free and sugar-free options. The stars of Pearl & Groove in West London are the mini cakes. At first glance these cakes don’t look as appealing as most cakes or pastries, but I learned (just as you will) to never judge a book by it’s cover. What these cakes lack in appearance they make up for in taste! If you don’t want to trek all the way to West London for these delicious cakes (though you should), you can enjoy some of their goodies scattered around London restaurants like Farmstand and Selfridges Food Hall. Besides their mini cakes and good tea, Pearl & Groove has a nice variety of savory dishes for breakfast and brunch.

Dishoom is a popular Bombay cafe with locations in Covent Garden, Shoreditch, Carnaby, and King’s Cross that always has a line regardless of what time you get there. Redemption Bar

Who said that socializing has to be at the expense of your health. At Redemption Bar in Notting Hill the owners created a place where you can socialize with friends, eat healthy, drink healthy, and not destroy your liver in the process. They call it “spoiling yourself without spoiling yourself”…it’s brilliant if you ask me. They are quite possibly the world’s healthiest bar restaurant, serving up vegan, sugar-free, and wheat-free food with an alcohol-free bar. Their creative drink menu includes mockjitos like crantini, flu fighter, activated charcoal martini, “beer”, and spirits.

As for the food menu, it’s packed with vegan delights such as pulled BBQ jackfruit, roasted papers and pecan parmesan, burgers, and Buddha bowls.

Celiac Note: Everything on the menu is gluten-free (oats are also certified), however some dishes are made with buckwheat flour that comes with a “may contain traces of gluten” message on the packaging. Hence why they say the are wheat-free. Just let them know you are a celiac and they will tell you what to avoid.

Thankfully, Cotto’s owner is a celiac who understands that and has made almost everything on their menu available as a gluten-free option. This includes pastas, pizzas, antipasti, bread, and soups. The only things we can’t have are the calzones and the stuffed pasta. Gluten-free meals are made in a dedicated kitchen, while gluten-free products are stored separately to avoid cross-contamination. Cotto is also certified by Coeliac UK. Cotto caters very well to vegetarians and other allergies too, as long as they are notified in advance.

The Famous Olley’s Fish Experience*

There is a shortage of safe gluten-free fish and chips restaurants in London, but thankfully Olley’s is one of the few. Not only is Olley’s renowned for the food, but it’s also certified by Coeliac UK. The entire menu is gluten-free every Monday and Tuesday, and no dishes are cooked with gluten on those nights. To avoid cross-contamination, everything is thoroughly cleaned, including the friers, prior to gluten-free nights. The menu is decorated with seafood like calamari, mussels, and King prawn shrimp, but the true stars are the great quality and sustainably sourced fish that can be fried, grilled, or steamed. Chain Restaurants with Gluten-Free Options in London

Below are a few British chain restaurants that offer safe, gluten-free options and are celiac-friendly. Some are certified by Coeliac UK (marked with an asterisk), which means they are trained to serve safe gluten-free meals to celiacs. Unlike the U.S., these chains use quality ingredients and real food, so please don’t think any less of them. Some of them serve damn good food and offer some of the best gluten-free food London has to offer.

With each chain having five or more branches in London, no matter where you are you won’t be far from safe gluten-free goodness! I told you that London is a celiac’s paradise!

Chipotle* – Scattered around London is the popular American chain Chipotle. With the exception of the flour tortillas, everything is gluten-free. To avoid cross-contamination, inform the waiter you’re gluten-free and ask if they can wash their hands, change their gloves, and be the only one in charge of making your burrito bowl. Make sure they don’t pass your food to the next person in line so they won’t contaminate your food with their gloves!

Tips for Navigating a Gluten-Free Diet in London

  • Make sure fries/chips are truly gluten-free if they are not homemade. Some manufactured fries contain gluten.
  • Double check that chips/fries aren’t fried with gluten containing items; same goes for gluten-free fried fish, chicken, etc.
  • For those who can’t tolerate gluten-removed beer, double check that gluten-free battered dishes are not made with beer. If it is made with beer, ensure it’s not from a gluten-removed beer.
  • Always make sure to say you are a celiac and not just order a gluten-free meal, so the chefs can take the proper precautions.
  • Most restaurants have an allergen list. Request it so you know what’s really in your food.
  • Items marked with “gluten-free option/available” does not mean it’s gluten-free. You must request the gluten-free option, otherwise it will contain gluten when served.
  • There are great restaurants (like Elliot’s) that don’t have GF options marked on their menu, but are very gluten-free friendly, so don’t be afraid to ask about gluten-free options if you don’t see any.
  • Look out for Coeliac UK’s GF symbol on menus and in the windows, as it means that the restaurant or venue is certified gluten-free and trained to cater to celiacs.
